Poisoning
Poisoning lets you coat weapons and food with poison brewed by alchemists. On UO Sagas only one-handed piercing weapons can be poisoned — the Dagger, Kryss and War Fork — which makes Poisoning the signature companion skill of the fencer-rogue. It trains to 120 via Skill Scrolls, and 120 is exactly what Lethal poison demands.
Poison levels
Each poison potion has a skill window: below the minimum you cannot apply it at all, at the maximum you apply it every time. The same window governs whether your poisoned weapon actually delivers its poison in combat.
| Poison | Skill window | Weapon charges |
|---|---|---|
| Lesser | 0–30 | 18 |
| Regular | 20–40 | 16 |
| Greater | 30–80 | 14 |
| Deadly | 70–100 | 12 |
| Lethal | 90–120 | 10 |
All five potions are brewed with Alchemy. Stronger poisons deal more damage per tick and tick longer.
Poison can also be delivered by the Poison spell, which rolls its level from your Magery and your distance to the target rather than from this skill — see Magery. Curing works the same way whichever applied it: bandages, the Cure spell or a cure potion — compare them in the Cure Simulator.
Poisoning a weapon
Use the skill, target a poison potion, then target a Dagger, Kryss or War Fork in your possession (you cannot poison anything locked down or in someone else's hands). On success the blade is coated with the listed number of charges.
In combat, each hit with a poisoned weapon:
- checks your Poisoning skill against the poison's window — this is a real skill check, so fighting with a poisoned blade passively trains Poisoning;
- on success consumes one charge, with a 50% chance to actually poison the victim.
If your Poisoning is below the poison's minimum, the blade never delivers it — the game warns you when you equip a weapon poisoned above your ability. Poison works in both PvM and PvP; a poisoned victim taking ticks is also periodically revealed if hidden.
Poisoning food
The same skill poisons food and drink. Only one piece from a stack is poisoned, and the tainted piece looks identical — Taste Identification is the only way to check a suspicious meal.
Risks and reputation
- Failing an application has a 5% chance to poison you with that same poison — keep cure potions handy when working with Deadly and Lethal.
- Every successful application costs a chunk of karma. Career poisoners go infamous.
- The empty bottle is returned after each application.
The Alchemist and Thief masteries both build on Poisoning — see Poisoning Mastery with perks like stronger poison ticks and slowing poisons (PvM only).
Training 0 → 120
Train by applying ever-stronger poisons to a dagger — buy or brew potions in bulk:
- 0–30: buy points from an NPC alchemist/thief trainer, then apply Lesser poison.
- 30–70: Greater poison (its wide 30–80 window carries you a long way).
- 70–90: Deadly poison.
- 90–120: Lethal poison — or simply fight with a Lethal-coated kryss and let the passive combat checks do the work.
