Pigments and Dyes

Beyond the ordinary dye tub, UO Sagas has a system of special pigments — rare colors that drop as loot and are turned into one-shot dyes and rechargeable dye tubs by crafters. An item colored with a special hue shows the hue's name and rarity in its tooltip.

Bottles (one-time use)

An alchemist crafts the base hair, beard or backpack dye — the bottle starts colorless. To color it, double-click a pile of 4 or more pigments and target the bottle: 4 pigments are consumed and the dye takes their hue. The bottle can then be used once.

Dye tubs (rechargeable)

A carpenter crafts the base tub — also colorless. Double-click 1 pigment and target the tub: the pigment is consumed and the tub takes its hue with 2 charges.

  • Recharging: with linseed oil in your backpack, double-click pigments of the same hue and target the tub. Each pigment + one linseed oil adds 2 charges. Stacks work — 10 pigments with 10 oils add 20 charges in one go. If you have fewer oils than pigments, only as many pigments as you have oil are used.
  • Charge cost: the furniture and runebook tubs spend 1 charge per item. The cloth tub is the exception — see below.

Top the tub up before the last charge is gone

The moment a tub's charges reach 0 it is destroyed"the last bits of dye dried up and ruined the dye tub." There is no refilling an empty one, because there is no empty one left. Add pigments while charges remain, or the tub and its hue go together.

Dyeing cloth and clothing

Double-click the Special Cloth Dye Tub and target what you want coloured. It has to be in your backpack — not worn, not in a bag inside your pack, not on the ground.

What it costs depends on what you target:

  • Cloth — the raw tailoring resource — costs 1 charge per cloth in the stack. If the stack is larger than the charges left, the tub dyes as much as it can afford: the coloured portion splits off into your backpack and the rest of the stack stays plain.
  • A finished garment costs exactly as much cloth as a tailor needs to make one. A Body Sash takes 4 cloth to sew, so it takes 4 charges to dye; a Robe takes 16 and 16. Nothing is consumed but the charges — the garment itself is simply recoloured.

Only cloth clothing works. Leather and studded pieces cannot be dyed with it, and neither can anything a tailor does not cut from cloth.

If the tub is short of charges you are told the exact number you need and nothing is spent, so there is no way to half-dye a garment by accident.

A fresh tub holds 2 charges, so anything past a bandana needs recharging first — a full robe is eight pigments and eight linseed oils.

Hue rarities

Pigments come in five loot tiers, plus the Eren hues that are sold rather than found. Every pigment below is a real, obtainable colour — the swatches are rendered from the game's own art and hue tables, so they are the colours you actually get.

Eren Hues — the purchased tier, including the limited-time releases that can no longer be bought once they rotate out. Smoke is separate again: it belongs to the First Light veteran set.

Blaze is shown without a swatch on purpose: its hue slot renders as a broken, near-flat colour in the client, so any swatch here would misrepresent it. Treat the in-game appearance as the truth until it is fixed.

Storing pigments

Keep them in a Pigments Almanac

A collection spread across this many hues eats a bank box fast. The Pigments Almanac holds all of them in one lightweight book — see Almanacs.
