New Player Guide

Welcome to UO Sagas! This guide walks you through your first day on the shard: getting the game running, surviving your first hours as a Young player, picking skills, earning gold, joining a town and working toward a house. Follow the links for the full details on each system.

1. Create an account and install the game

Head to the account portal at my.uosagas.com, register an account and link your Discord — linking is mandatory to play. Your website e-mail and password are also your in-game login.

Then follow the Game Setup Guide to download the launcher, which installs and patches the client for you.

2. Your first hours: Adena and Young status

Every new character starts on Adena, the protected new-player island, with Young Player Status. While Young you enjoy:

  • No loss of items when you die.
  • Free use of the Ghost Gates between towns.
  • Access to Adena's vendors and its resource spots (mining, lumberjacking, cotton).

Adena itself is completely safe — no player can attack or steal from you there — and the nearby Caverns of Adena are a beginner dungeon with the same protection. The catch: skills only gain up to 70.0 on the island, so it is a training ground, not a home.

Young status ends after 40 hours of playtime, when your total skills reach 450, if you kill another player, or when you renounce it yourself (left-click your character and choose "Renounce Young Player Status").

Take this time to learn the User Interface and tune your Game Settings. A list of useful text commands lives at Commands.

3. Pick your first skills

Read Skills Overview to understand how progression works: skills grow by using them. You can also pay NPC trainers to teach you the basics of a skill — trainers take gold coins from your backpack, and they do not give change, so hand over exactly what they ask for.

A few proven starting directions:

  • Warrior — a weapon skill plus Tactics, Healing and Anatomy. Hunt the graveyards and the first dungeon levels.
  • Mage — Magery, Meditation and Evaluating Intelligence. Reagents are an ongoing cost, so pair with a money-maker.
  • Crafter/GathererMining, Lumberjacking or Fishing feeding a craft. Steady income from day one.
  • TamerAnimal Taming is a long road but ends with powerful pets.

Combat characters should also read up on Skill Masteries — a PvM specialization system that grows alongside your skills.

4. Making money

Gold on UO Sagas is account-based bank currency — read Currency for how the bank works (say bank near a banker, balance to check your total, withdraw 500 to take coins out). Early earners:

  • Gathering and crafting — ore, wood, fish and leather are always in demand, raw or crafted; sell to players or NPC vendors.
  • Hunting — monsters drop gold and loot; graveyards and dungeon level 1 are good starting grounds. Watch for paragons once you're stronger.
  • Citizen quests — daily town quests pay points toward ranks and rewards once you join a town.
  • Treasure maps and dungeon cheststreasure hunting and hidden dungeon chests reward lockpickers and adventurers.
  • Achievements — many achievements pay out as you naturally play.

5. Join a town

Once you're established on the mainland, register as a citizen of Westwend or Volaria — the two towns in the Citizenship system. Find the town registrar, join with a click, and start taking citizen quests for PvM, crafting and gathering. Citizenship brings town-wide bonuses, ranks and titles, and at the very top (Duke) even the right to place a house in the town outskirts. An overview of all the towns is at Towns.

6. Get a house

Housing is open placement in the world — see the Housing Overview for the rules. The short version:

  • Buy a house deed from an Architect NPC, then find a legal spot (not in guard zones, dungeons, Adena or on roads) and place it.
  • Every account gets one house by default.
  • Houses on Sagas are upgradeable: they start small and can be extended twice via the house menu — see Expandable Houses and the house list.
  • Houses decay in 30 days if not refreshed — open and close a door in your house regularly to refresh it.

Until you can afford a house, your bank box (125 items, unlimited weight, plus storage upgrades) is your home base.

7. Stay safe out there

Outside guarded towns, UO Sagas is open PvP territory. Read PvP and Player Killers before carrying anything you can't afford to lose — and avoid New Buccaneer's Den until you know what you're doing. When you die, find a healer or a wandering healer to resurrect, then recover your body.
