Grimoire
Grimoires are magical tomes found as loot that boost your spell damage — in PvM only. A grimoire is held in your hand while you cast from your spellbook as usual. They cannot be crafted: you find them on spell-casting monsters and in dungeon chests and treasure chests.
How grimoires work
- A grimoire is equipped in one hand. It stays equipped while you cast — it does not unequip after a spell.
- You cannot equip a grimoire while you are in PvP combat, and none of its bonuses apply to spells cast against other players.
- Grimoires have charges. Each damage-dealing spell you cast against a monster consumes one charge; when the last charge is spent the grimoire crumbles to dust. Charges cannot be refilled.
- You can still meditate while holding a grimoire.
- Grimoires drop unidentified. An unidentified grimoire works exactly like an identified one — identifying it only reveals its properties on the tooltip.
Magical properties
A dropped grimoire can roll up to four kinds of bonuses:

Damage level
Multiplies the damage of your offensive spells against monsters:

Grants a flat Evaluating Intelligence bonus while the grimoire is held:

Slayer
A slayer grimoire doubles your spell damage against the matching creature family. Possible slayers: Arachnid, Elemental, Reptiloid, Humanoid, Daemonic, Nature, Dragonic, Orcish, Saga, Fey and Undead.
Slayer grimoires are rare — only a small fraction of well-rolled grimoires carries a slayer, so a Vanquishing slayer grimoire is a real treasure.
Selling grimoires
Mage NPC vendors buy grimoires from players. The price scales with the grimoire's damage level, enchantment, remaining charges and quality, so a loaded Vanquishing grimoire fetches far more than a plain one.
Skill Masteries
The grimoire is also the tool of the Resisting Spells mastery: its perks store a portion of the spell damage you take as energy in your held grimoire, boosting your next attacks — and Sudden Expulsion lets you double-click the grimoire to unleash the stored energy at your target.
