Resources

Every craft on UO Sagas is fed by raw materials, most of them pulled from the world by the four gathering skills. This page is a reference for what exists, where it comes from, and what skill you need to use it.

The six material tiers ↑ top

Metal, leather, and wood all share the same six-tier ladder, so a smith, a tailor and a bowyer climb the very same steps. The tier decides the item's hue and — for weapons, armor, and bows — the cap of its magic level, which is rolled at craft time:

Ingots Boards Leather Tier Magic level Skill to gather Skill to craft with
Regular / Iron ingot Regular / Iron board Regular / Iron leather Regular / Iron 0 0
Shadow ingot Shadow board Shadow leather Shadow 1 (Ruin / Defense) 60 60
Copper ingot Copper board Copper leather Copper 2 (Might / Guarding) 80 80
Bronze ingot Bronze board Bronze leather Bronze 3 (Force / Hardening) 100 100
Verite ingot Verite board Verite leather Verite 4 (Power / Fortification) 110 110
Valorite ingot Valorite board Valorite leather Valorite 5 (Vanquishing / Invulnerability) 120 120

"Skill to gather" is the Mining / Lumberjacking / Skinning skill needed to pull that tier from its vein; "skill to craft with" is the crafting skill needed to select it as a material. Higher tiers are much rarer, and rarer still outside dungeons — see gathering for the odds and how Luck improves them.

Note: Dull Copper, Gold, and Agapite metal, and Frostwood, do not exist as workable material tiers on Sagas — the ladder above is the whole game.

Metal — ore and ingots ↑ top

Ore comes from Mining mountains and caves. Smelt ore into ingots by double-clicking it near a forge. Ingots feed Blacksmithy and Tinkering: Iron, Shadow Iron, Copper, Bronze, Verite, and Valorite ingots per the tier table above.

Smiths can also resmelt player-made metal items back into ingots (half the recipe's amount), and higher tiers require Blacksmithy skill to melt down: Copper 65, Bronze 80, Verite 95, Valorite 110.

Wood — logs and boards ↑ top

Logs come from Lumberjacking. Turn logs into boards by using an axe on the log stack; colored woods need Carpentry or Lumberjacking skill to work:

Wood Skill to make boards
Regular 0
Shadow 50
Copper 65
Bronze 80
Verite 95
Valorite 110

Boards (or logs) feed Carpentry and Bowcraft & Fletching. Items keep the hue of the wood used, and wooden weapons, shields, and bows get the wood's magic level.

Leather ↑ top

Leather comes from skinning creature corpses, in the same six tiers (Regular through Valorite Leather). It feeds Tailoring: all leather and studded armor, footwear (with cloth), and quivers. Colored leather gives armor its protection magic level.

Cloth ↑ top

Bought from tailor shops as bolts of cloth — cut a bolt with scissors to get 50 cloth. Cloth is the unit material for all clothing and part of every footwear recipe. Cloth and bolts are dyeable with a dye tub; a single cloth can be cut further into a bandage.

Alchemy and Inscription supplies ↑ top

  • Reagents — Black Pearl, Bloodmoss, Garlic, Ginseng, Mandrake Root, Nightshade, Spider's Silk, and Sulfurous Ash, bought from mage and alchemist shops. Potions each consume a quantity of one reagent; spell scrolls consume the casting reagents of their spell.
  • Empty bottles — one per potion brewed. Sold by alchemist shops.
  • Blank scrolls — one per spell scroll; books consume several. Sold by mage shops.
  • Blank maps — one per map drawn by a Cartographer.
  • Linseed oil — the reagent for alchemical special dyes.

Magical Essence ↑ top

Material Source Used for
Magical Essence Magical Essence Recycling magic items — never sold by NPCs Boosting magic crafts; 8th circle scrolls

A stackable resource introduced with the 2026-08 crafting update. The whole supply comes from players recycling magic items — the Recycle button in the craft menu, or a Magic Item Recycler chest at home: 10 essence plus 10 per magic level for an identified weapon, armor piece, grimoire or instrument (looted gear pays one and a half times, your own crafts half), and 4 per 8th circle magery scroll.

It is an opt-in booster: with Use Essence switched on in the craft menu, a successful craft from colored material consumes it for +10 roll points on every magic attribute roll. The cost follows the material tier — Shadow 20, Copper 40, Bronze 60, Verite 90, Valorite 120 per item; a failed craft consumes none. It is also a fixed ingredient of Inscription's 8th circle scrolls (8 each). Everything else — yields, what counts as looted, the material refund — is on the Crafting Overview.

Special crafting materials ↑ top

A few high-end recipes need rare materials from monsters and the world:

  • Dragon Scales — required for the recipe-gated Daemon armor set (Blacksmithy).
  • Enchanted Bark — required for the recipe-gated Leaf armor set and leather mempo (Tailoring).
  • Bones — required alongside leather for bone armor (Tailoring).
  • Gems — Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond and more; found while mining and used in Tinkering (jewelry and mastery items).
  • Clover — used by Tinkers for luck jewelry.
