Meditation

Meditation governs how quickly your mana returns. It works passively all the time, and you can actively meditate (use the skill) to enter a trance that regenerates mana twice as fast.

Passive regeneration

Your mana ticks back at a speed based on (Intelligence + Meditation) / 2:

Int + Meditation average Time per mana point
0 7.0s
50 ~3.0s
75 ~1.8s
100 (GM mage, 100 Int) 1.0s

Armor that blocks meditation adds extra seconds on top (see below).

Above the 100 average the curve flattens out, so scrolling Meditation past Grandmaster gets its own bonus instead: every point above 100 shaves another 0.005s off the tick, up to −0.10s fully scrolled. That is exactly what a maxed Mana Regen mastery perk is worth, and the two stack:

100-Int mage Tick Mana per minute
Meditation 100 1.00s 60
Meditation 120 0.90s 67 (+11%)
Meditation 120 + maxed Mana Regen perk 0.80s 75 (+25%)

Two things to know before you spend scrolls on it:

  • This only matters if your Intelligence is high. The tick is driven by the average of Int and Meditation, and below an average of 100 the normal curve was already rewarding every point — a 50-Int character going 100 → 120 Meditation improves from about 1.76s to 1.40s with no help from the bonus above. The bonus exists to fix the top end, where the curve flattens.
  • It improves passive regeneration only. Active meditation already halves the tick down to the 0.5s floor, so neither scrolls nor the mastery perk make med-sitting faster.

Active meditation

Use the skill to attempt a trance. On success you regenerate mana at double speed until the trance breaks — moving, fighting, casting or using items ends it. Success is a straight skill check, so a Grandmaster almost never fails.

  • Your hands must be free — but spellbooks, runebooks, Grimoires, torches and lanterns are all fine.
  • A shield may stay equipped if your Parrying is 80 or higher — a shard-custom rule for mage-tank hybrids.
  • Unlike some servers, you can meditate at any health level, and heavy armor never prevents you from entering the trance — it just slows the regeneration.

Armor and meditation

Each equipped piece hinders mana regeneration depending on its material:

Armor Meditation
Cloth, leather, leaf Fully meditable — no penalty
Hide 30% penalty
Studded (incl. studded mempo) 45% penalty
Bone (incl. bone helm) 60% penalty
Metal (ringmail, chainmail, plate), woodland, dragon-scale Full penalty
Items with the Mage Armor property No penalty regardless of material
Wooden shields No penalty with Parrying 100+ (reduced from 80+)

The penalty scales with the piece's armor rating, so a full plate suit slows mana regain dramatically while a leather suit costs nothing.

Skill cap and mastery

  • Meditation caps at 100 normally and can be raised to 120 with skill scrolls, once you are already Grandmaster.
  • The scrolled points only count outside PvP. While you are flagged for PvP combat the bonus above switches off and you regenerate as if you were at 100 — the same rule the Mana Regen mastery perk already follows.
  • Buying scrolls never makes the trance harder to enter: the success check is a fixed difficulty, not tied to your cap.
  • Its Skill Mastery (PvM only, learned from a mage NPC at skill 90) offers Magical Wrath (+spell damage while above half mana), Free Cast Chance, faster Mana Regen ticks, and the ultimate Mana Surge (bonus spell damage equal to your current mana).

Training 0 → 120

Meditation gains both from active trances and passively whenever your mana is refilling, so a mage levels it almost automatically:

Skill Method
0 – 30 Pay a mage NPC for training
30 – 100 Drain your mana (cast spells — this trains Magery and Eval Int too), then actively meditate it back. Repeat.

Wear no armor while training and keep using the skill even after failures — failed attempts can still gain. Region gain modifiers apply as usual — see Skills Overview.
