Cooking
Cooking turns raw ingredients into food with a skillet — the only cooking tool on Sagas. What sets it apart from other crafts is that most recipes also need a nearby station: a heat source, an oven, or a flour mill. On Sagas the skill is far more than flavor — the custom buff food dishes give real combat bonuses, and their best recipes need a cook at 100+. General crafting rules are in the Crafting Overview.
The skillet ↑ top
A skillet holds 100 uses, or 150 if it was crafted exceptionally. Food has no quality or magic to roll, so a skillet tinkered from colored metal (see Tinkering) helps the way a cook actually needs: flat success chance on every dish —
| Skillet | Success chance | |
|---|---|---|
![]() |
Iron | — |
![]() |
Shadow Iron | +2% |
![]() |
Copper | +4% |
![]() |
Bronze | +6% |
![]() |
Verite | +8% |

Valorite | +10% |
The bonus needs a real attempt behind it — a recipe you have no chance at without the tool stays at zero. On the hard buff-food dishes, those ten percentage points are the difference between wasted ingredients and a dependable kitchen.
Stations ↑ top
| Station | Needed for | Counts as |
|---|---|---|
| Heat source | Barbecue meats and all buff food | Campfires, fireplaces, fire pits, forges, braziers, ovens |
| Oven | All baking (bread, pies, pizza, cakes) | Stone and sandstone ovens |
| Flour mill | Milling wheat into flour | Flour mills |
Every oven is also a heat source, so a house with a stone oven covers both. Carpenters craft stone oven and flour mill deeds for houses; out in the world, a simple campfire handles all barbecue and buff-food cooking.
The baking chain ↑ top
Baked goods are built in steps, each its own recipe (all trainable from skill 0):
- Sack of Flour — 2 wheat sheaves at a mill
- Dough — flour + water
- Sweet Dough — dough + jar of honey; Cake Mix — flour + sweet dough; Cookie Mix — honey + sweet dough
- Unbaked pies, pizzas, and quiche — dough + a filling (eggs, ribs, sausage, cheese, fruit)
- Bake in an oven: bread, cookies, cake, muffins, quiche, meat/fruit/apple/peach/pumpkin pies, sausage and cheese pizza
Barbecue is simpler: raw bird, chicken, lamb, ribs, fish steaks, and eggs cook over any heat source — and a whole stack cooks in one action.
There is no exceptional food — cooked items are always normal quality, and a failed cook sometimes wastes the ingredients.
Buff food (Sagas custom) ↑ top
The reason to be a serious cook: four tiers of plated dishes that grant an hour of mana and stamina regeneration when eaten. Every recipe needs a heat source and consumes a plate and spices on top of the food itself; the top tiers also need carpenter-made tablets (see Ingredients for sourcing the components).
The full effect numbers have their own page
Buff Food covers what each tier is actually worth — tick rates, regeneration per minute, the no-stacking rule, and all twelve dishes with their exact ingredients.
| Tier | Skill | Example dishes | Extra components |
|---|---|---|---|
| Poor | 50–75 | Poor Fish, Poor Steak, Poor Cooked Vegetables | plate + spices |
| Medium | 70–100 | Fish / Meat / Vegetable Stew | plate + spices |
| High | 80–115 | High Fish / Meat / Vegetable Plate | + Craftable Tablet |
| Chef Feast | 100–120 | Chef Fish / Meat / Vegetable Feast | + Craftable Large Tablet, recipe required |
Each tier comes in a fish, meat, and vegetable version, so any hunter, farmer, or fisherman can feed the pipeline. The Chef Feast recipes must be learned from recipe scrolls found as loot, and both tablet types are made by carpenters (the large one needs a 100+ carpenter).
Raising the skill ↑ top
Cooking reaches 120 with Crafting skill scrolls — needed to cook the Chef Feasts (100–120) and High Plates (80–115) reliably.
Training is cheap because almost every basic recipe works across the whole skill range:
| Skill | Cook |
|---|---|
| 0–50 | Cook fish steaks or ribs over a campfire (stacks cook in one go), or bake bread |
| 50–70 | Poor buff dishes (fish is cheapest if you fish your own) |
| 70–80 | Medium stews |
| 80–100 | High plates, or keep cooking cheap stews and bread |
| 100–120 | Chef Feasts once you have the recipes; High plates otherwise |
Fishing pairs naturally with Cooking — raw fish steaks feed you from 0 all the way to the Chef Fish Feast (which wants a Big Fish). See Fishing.
