Begging
Honest answer first: Begging is a flavor skill. It earns pocket change, costs you karma, and has no hidden uses on this shard. Train it for the roleplay or the title, not for profit.
How It Works
Use the skill and target a human NPC within 2 tiles (you cannot beg from players, animals or while mounted). Your character bows, and after a moment the NPC decides:
- On success you receive a little gold — at most 10–14 coins (slightly more with high fame), and never more than a tenth of what the NPC is actually carrying. Many NPCs are simply broke.
- Every success costs karma (until you reach a fairly low floor), and once your karma is negative NPCs increasingly distrust you — "Thou dost not look trustworthy... no gold for thee today!" — making further begging fail more often.
- There is a cooldown of roughly ten seconds between attempts.
So the skill actively works against itself: the more you beg, the worse a beggar you become. Any monster in the woods drops more gold per minute.
Skill Cap and Training
Begging caps at 100.0 (no skill scroll). It gains from successful begging attempts — wander a town targeting fresh NPCs and accept that your karma will suffer. If you care about your karma, train this skill before doing good deeds, not after.
