Arms Lore
On most shards Arms Lore is a throwaway skill. On UO Sagas it has been reworked into a real warrior skill: besides appraising equipment it grants a passive swing speed bonus (in PvM and PvP alike), trains to 120, and carries its own Skill Mastery for two-handed weapons and bows.
Passive: Faster Swings
Just having Arms Lore makes you swing faster — against any opponent, in PvM and PvP alike:
Swing delay reduction = 5% × (Arms Lore / 100)
That is 5% at GM and 6% at 120.0, scaling linearly with your skill from 0 to 120. It stacks with the swing speed rules described on the Weapons page.
Active: Appraising Equipment
Using the skill and targeting an item tells you (checked up to 120.0, ~1 second between uses):
- Weapons: current wear ("It is in full repair" ... "broken"), a damage class from "of no substantial value in combat" up to the deadliest tier, and whether poison is smeared on the blade.
- Armor and shields: current wear and a defense class from "of no meaningful defense" upward.
For exact numbers most players use the item's displayed stats; the poison warning is the one genuinely useful appraisal — check suspicious weapons before a duel.
Skill Mastery
Arms Lore is the mastery skill for two-handed weapons and bows: passive two-handed damage per level, a chance to daze enemies so they swing slower, bonus damage against wounded targets, and the Rampage ultimate. Its one-handed counterpart is the Tactics mastery. Details on the Arms Lore Mastery page.
Skill Cap and Training
Arms Lore goes to 120.0 via Combat-type skill scrolls.
Training is easy and safe: stand at a forge or in your house and repeatedly use the skill on weapons and armor in your backpack. Gains continue all the way to your cap — buy a stack of cheap weapons from the blacksmith and appraise away, or train it passively while you fight (the skill checks also fire when appraising, not from combat itself, so active use is the way).
